Why Do Government Employees Pay Taxes?

I’ve always thought this was kind of dumb.

When I was in the army, it occurred to me that the income taxes I was paying were going straight back to my employer. That seemed like an awful waste of time and effort. Since that point, I’ve said that government employees shouldn’t pay income taxes. Instead, they should be made tax exempt, and we should cut salaries to offset the amount no longer collected in taxes.

Should be a net savings if done right, there is in fact a cost associated with collecting taxes, not collecting any taxes eliminates that cost. I know it would be a bit complicated, but “shirley” the government doesn’t need to pay money out and collect some of it back and accomplish nothing but creating more paperwork. We spend billions just to comply with the tax code, and that is wasted money.
