Electoral College

Just to get my opinion out there, I do support the electoral college. Here’s why.

We are a nation made up of 50 different countries, or states, if you will. We are not a country made of 50 different divisions. Consider the difference between the United Kingdom and Canada.

The UK is made up of 4 countries: Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Canada is a single country, divided into provinces.

The US is essentially like the UK, not like Canada.

We elect our president based on popular vote, effectively by country/state, rather than clumping every one of the 50 sovereign states together as one country. We are a federation of small countries, as the UK is. Each state does give up a part of their sovereignty to be part of this federation, but not all of it.

Two countries, actually: Quebec and the Rest of Canada (RoC). In practice, nothing unites Quebec and the RoC other than force of habit. Far more unites Connecticut and Rhode Island or New Jersey and New York than Quebec and Ontario – you have a common language, at least.

Ah, thats right! They are usually not far from being the mood for a shooting war right?
