The Best President

During the build up the the last couple of presidential elections, I always start asking the question, “what qualifications would the ideal president have?”

Private sector experience? Political experience? Perhaps a former or current governor would make the best president, that individual already having experience wrangling with a legislature. Really I am forced to come to the conclusion that one single thing is most important of all.

A president doesn’t need to be a super genius, or have a law degree. They wouldn’t need to have private sector or political experience. The one single quality that a president can have is the ability to surround himself or herself with the right people for the job. William S. Buckley said the following:

I’d rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University.
William F. Buckley, Jr.
At first glance there may not seem to be a big connection here, but there is. What I like to imagine is Mr. Buckley would draft the first 400 people and make them serve as legislators under duress, much like a jury. Juries are asked to rule on points of law all the time. Interestingly enough jury duty seems to be one of two exemptions to the prohibition on slavery or indentured servitude, the other exception being labor as part of a prison or jail sentence. Perhaps congress would operate much better if the people holding the power didn’t want to hold it but were forced to. (The same goes for the office of president.)
You can have a moron as a president and still come out on top if, once again, the right advisers and appointees are picked. No president will ever have a more important gift to give to their country than their ability to choose carefully.
