Robots, Not Obama Policies Slowing Hiring

Yes indeed. It isn’t the enormous regulatory uncertainty or concerns over whether taxes will increase on investments or corporate earnings, it’s robots. Our economy is so efficient in some places they just need fewer workers!

“There are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers. You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate.”

Damned robots. Given the huge new health care expense the administration has tossed onto the backs of nearly every business entity in the country, it’s no wonder they are happier to have machines do work than people. Machines that work 24 hours a day and don’t need sexual harassment training.

When its more attractive to hire people than replace them with machines, when its more effective, when business knows what to expect from the EPA and the IRS in the near term (at least), when there is a need for more employees, more people will be hired.

It does seem like Obama is beginning to grasp the fact that jobs are to make things not to keep people busy and pay them for unneeded work.

Will the anti robot stance help Obama in 2012? I don’t know. The Diebold machines which count all the votes probably won’t like it.
