Taxing the Rich, the Liberal Solution to Everything

It always amuses me that the liberal solution to everything seems to be taxing the rich to pay for ineffectual government programs. Programs that tend to do little more than give the poorest among us no incentive to climb out of their penury.

It is also amusing that liberals think that by raising tax rates that revenue increases will surely follow. Nothing but wishful thinking on their part as higher taxes rates inevitably lead to lower revenues above a certain level. A complete disregard of the fact that people respond to stimuli, like all other living things, but than liberals would have us all be something more like robots if they could have it their way.

I agree with your original point, that the left has no memory and consistently wants to raise taxes over and over again, and they assume this will have no “deadweight losses.”

However, I have to chime in that the Laffer Curve is a little more complex than that. Raising taxes usually does bring in more tax money, but in certain scenarios it has the opposite effect.

Laffer curve or no, the fact is no amount of tax raising is going to suffice without reform of existing programs that are bleeding out, and significantly severe limits on spending.

That’s true, as long as government is determined to spend every dollar they bring in plus some extra for good measure, it doesn’t matter what they do for taxes.

Really? ’cause I’ve been hearing the liberal solution as lower taxes for the middle class, closed tax loopholes for corporations, and a return to higher taxes on the wealthy – ya know, those people who haven’t been creating any jobs with the money they don’t need.

But maybe we can return to 1960 when the poverty rate was near 20% and people still thought government wasn’t needed to lower that.

Because liberals have some magic privilege to determine how much money a person has a right to make?

Because corporations actually pay taxes? (hint, no they don’t, consumers do.)

How difficult is it to understand that a 50, 60 or 70% tax rate would not increase revenues?

I think you’re assuming the goal is to just have a massive economy. If that’s the case, I can come up with a whole host of ways we can do that. For starters, let’s be China for the next 50 years.

I am assuming that if you want more money from the rich than a super high tax rate isn’t the way to go. It’s not that way to go if you want more money from anyone.

I hope you realize that a massive economy is the only way to pay for all the government programs you would like to have to regulate and control every aspect of peoples lives that you deem them too ignorant to control themselves.
