Jules Verne

Be sure to check out Google today before they change the logo. It’s Jules Vernes birthday or something and they have a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea themed thing going on. You can move the little joystick and dive up and down in the ‘ocean’. One of their better ones.

I’m glad they are honoring Jules Verne though. A true visionary, not only did he write a book, which is one of my favorites, about going to the moon (From the earth to the moon) he really had a rather workable idea of how to get there. A giant gun basically.

While it wouldn’t ever work, not even close, the book was published at the time of the American Civil War, 1865. The fact that he could put together a concept of how humans could get to the moon over 140 years ago is pretty inspiring to me.

In fact it has been discussed that a big gun would be a good way of getting (very) small payloads into orbit. In addition to being extremely cheap to do, we wouldn’t need all that dangerous rocket fuel and guns are something we are good at, at least compared to rockets which are still a bit of an issue for us from time to time.

I think he would be very pleased to be honored by Google. If you are looking for a good book to read, The Mysterious Island is another fantastic novel by Verne, I would recommend it to anyone.
