Michael Moore’s Bodyguard Is Armed
“We’re an awfully fearful country considering that, unlike most nations, we’ve never been invaded. Why on earth would we need 300 million guns in our homes? It’s because too many white people are afraid of black people. Period.”
If I could pull him away from the buffet line, just for a few seconds…
Sigh. I won’t say you are a fat, anti-capitalist capitalist, millionaire, pro-union activist who choose to do a pile of business in a right to work state to save money, and haven’t the slightest idea of the history of this country.
I’m better than that.
I will mention that the US has been invaded at least 3 times, unless you count the Kings friends after we declared independence, the war of 1812, and that friendly Mexican fellow all as undocumented workers, instead of armed invaders.
Though I’m not entirely sure you can count, so that point may not be valid.
The scary thing is not that he thinks this way, I’m somewhat doubtful he does, the scary thing is that some people really do think that way. Really, think about how stupid these particular comments were.
1. The vast majority of guns, at least long guns, are not owned for personal protection. They are for sport. Hunting, target shooting, pest control, etc. The fact is, ammunition is more relevant to what a weapon is good for for than the weapon itself is. Most long guns would be well suited as weapons of war, if they ever needed to be used as such. Additionally if the rules of war were followed, the devastating ammunition used for hunting would be exchanged for the less devastating stock used in warfare.
2. Black people own plenty of guns, but that’s cool with Mr. Moore. White people are more likely to own them, true, but that’s hardly significant given the urban/rural distribution of the groups mentioned. White people and black people in rural areas are far more likely to own firearms than blacks and whites in urban areas. Oddly, both are more likely to be killed guns in those comparatively low gun ownership urban zones, but I’ve talked about that plenty before. (Though I’m sure Mr. Moore would attribute any black gun ownership to white hate as well.)
3. White people don’t kill black people. For that matter, black people don’t kill white people. See here. It’s not entirely true, there are of course interracial murders and I would think something was fishy if that wasn’t the case, frankly, that the vast majority of murders are intraracial seems a bit suspicious, but I can’t find any thing to indicate funny business with the numbers.
4. Finally, like I mentioned in my imagined commentary to the great walrus, we have been invaded at least three times, and victory was not a sure thing in two of them, if victory can really ever be sure. The US has in fact fought several wars in close proximity to its territory and we haven’t always kept it. Only as far back as ww2 we lost the Philippines and there was a significant threat to Hawaii for a time, had Hawaii fallen, an invasion of California would have been very plausible. After May 1942, Japan was effectively no longer a threat to our mainland, but the fact remains. I’ll leave Germany for another post, but attacks on the mainland US were simply too expensive and it is true that the fact of massive weapons ownership, even then, was not something lost on Axis forces.
I do feel bad for Moore, he is either incredibly stupid or… I really don’t have any other ideas, but I leave the possibility open for another explanation for the near constant flow of absolute nonsense flowing from his mouth every moment that he isn’t filling it with whole pies, potato chips, and small children.
